Myth: Left-Handed People Qualify for Disability
Back in January, a Mouthwire article dated February 7, 2015 titled “Left-Handed People Now Eligible for Disability” was widely spread among Facebook users. The article referenced news from “Left-Handed Non-Discrimination Association”:
“As of February 1, people suffering from severe cases of left-handedness may be eligible to receive Social Security benefits.
Lefties everywhere celebrated a long-awaited victory with the passing of the Justice for Dexterously Challenged Act, which adds left-handedness to the growing recognized list of disabilities.”
However, the “Left-Handed Nondiscrimination Association” nor the “Justice for Dexterously Challenged Act” exist. All searches for these terms lead only directly to the Mouthwire article itself. In fact, the site features the following disclaimer on their website:
“Mouthwire is purely satirical web publication and intended for entertainment purposes only. Our website and social media content uses only fictional names, except in cases of a public figure and celebrity parody. Any other use of a real name is accidental and coincidental.”
The Social Security Administration defines disability as not being able to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA) because of a medically-determinable physical or mental impairments; This is expected to result in death or that has lasted or is expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months. For more information on what the Social Security Administration considers disability visit their website or call the Thurswell Law 24/7 at (248) 354-2222.
