If you work long hours, this could be increasing your chance of serious cardiovascular complications. A study from the European Heart Journal found that those who recorded having long work hours have a greater potential to develop atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat that can cause blood clots, heart failure, and other heart-related complications.
The study began with 85,000+ men and women who had no previous record of atrial fibrillation. The researchers spent 10 years studying and evaluating their work schedules, medical records, and death certificates. They found that the more hours the people worked, the greater their risk for atrial fibrillation.
Although they adjusted for variables such as sex, economic status, smoking, alcohol use, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, and more, the study did not account for factors such as job type or shift work. It is also important to note that there are many other factors that can lead to atrial fibrillation. The lead author of the study still notes that the relative risk of receiving atrial fibrillation from long work hours is comparable to the risk of receiving heart complications from diabetes, obesity, and heart failure.
