Corvettes, Porsches, Mustangs – these car models (and their operators) have a reputation for speed but, according to a new survey, they’re not among the top 10 cars whose drivers rack up the most speeding tickets. Regardless of car make and model, any vehicle that pushes the speed limit risks causing a Michigan car accident.
Speeding Tickets for Reckless Drivers
The insurance shopping website Insurify analyzed the self-reported violations history provided by over 1.6 million drivers when applying for insurance. The trends they discovered along the way were surprising.
Insurify discovered that the 10 vehicles with the most speeding tickets per driver are as follows:
- Subaru WRX
- Scion FR-S
- Volkswagen GTI
- Hyundai Genesis coupe
- Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
- Ram 2500
- Dodge Dart
- Infiniti G37
- Subaru Impreza
- Hyundai Veloster
These 10 vehicles aren’t necessarily the first car models that come to mind when you think of reckless driving. Some of the most innocuous-looking cars on the road, like the Infiniti G37 and Dodge Dart, are getting some serious speeding tickets. Compact cars like the Hyundai Veloster and the Volkswagen GTI seem like they can’t possibly have the power to achieve some serious speed.
In place of the Ferraris and other sporty cars that naturally draw attention to themselves, there lurk models like the Subaru WRX with wings and the sleek Scion FR-S. Imposing models like the Ram 2500 make a lot of noise and have a lot of power but, in the wrong hands, they can rack up impressive speeds. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has a bulky body too, looking like a machine better made for off-roading than highway driving.
Cost-Conscious Michigan Drivers
Fiat Chrysler models take ownership of three of the top 10 spots, Subaru and Hyundai each have two, and Toyota and Nissan each hold one spot. Models from Ford, Honda, and General Motors are nowhere to be found on Insurify’s list, but maybe that just means they have more responsible drivers.
Luxury brands with high-performance cars like BMW’s M-serious, Cadillac’s V-series, and Mercedes’ AMG are also absent, but maybe they have drivers who are super-cautious about their super-expensive vehicles (and accompanying insurance costs). Each of the cars in the top 10 has a base price that Insurify describes as “significantly below” $37,285, which was the average retail price of a new car in June 2019.
Does it take a pricier car to create a more careful driver? Not necessarily. Here are the 10 vehicles from the same survey who had the lowest percentage of speeding tickets in the last seven years, in ascending order:
- Chevrolet Astro
- Chevrolet C2500
- Mazda MPV
- KIA Rondo
- Smart Fortwo
- Ford Windstar
- Dodge Caravan
- Chevrolet Venture
- Audi Q7
- Ford Contour
Watching Out for Speeding Drivers
Police officers are looking out for all speeding drivers, regardless of the ride they’re in. What’s most important is that other motorists look out for reckless drivers in all makes and models of car too. The most likely cause of a car accident might not be who you expect, and underestimating another motorist’s ability to drive poorly (or drive well) is a big mistake.
Ultimately, it’s the driver of a vehicle who is to blame for speeding, not the car itself. Sure, some cars have serious horsepower, but a characteristic like this isn’t an excuse for having a lead foot on the gas pedal.
