Vehicle Accident Deaths Increase in 2016

Published on May 20th, 2017

Michigan vehicle accident statistics have become frightening. For the second year, Michigan deaths increased 10% up from 963 in 2015 to 1,064 in 2016. Last year became the worst in more than a decade for traffic fatalities in Michigan. Unfortunately, the state of Michigan is not alone. The increase of traffic crashes and highway deaths has become a national trend.

Across the country, a combination of cheaper gasoline prices, driving more miles, and use of mobile devices are contributing to the rising toll of traffic mayhem, according to the executive director of the Transportation Improvement  Association. The Michigan State Police believe that distracted driving is likely the cause of the increase in accidents locally.

According to traffic safety experts, it is more important than ever for drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts, turn off cell phones, and take extra caution while driving. Additionally, Michigan residents are advised to be extra-cautious this spring as more bicyclists and pedestrians are on the roads.
